In chapter 6 the the characters Lord Henry and Basil talk about Dorian's engagement to Sybil. Basil is very concerned that she will bring him down. I keep wondering why everyone in this book is so impulsive. Lord henry's words imply to me that it's an experience that he would like to have since he cant recall being engaged, and i began to wonder back then did they do things just to do them? Dorian seems to think that delightful things happen randomly. He continues to go on and on about how pretty the girl is and whatnot which gets on my nerves a bit since he's rambled about it for the last three chapters. Basil seems to be very upset about dorian's marriage, for reason i dont know but i think he might be gay.
In the next chapter it got alot more interesting. Sybil's performance of Juliet was awful. This was funny because it was the first time that Basil and Lord Henry saw her, and she seemed to not be able to act. They thought she might be ill but she was just pretending to act bad because she had gotten bored of the theatre. Dorian went to talk to her after the play and she told him this. He broke up with her because he thought she was stupid and nieve, claiming that she killed his love for her. It seemed that he only liked the way she acted and that he didnt really like her. After he got home he noticed that the picture had changed it started to look evil.
I'm starting to think that his wish that he made in the first chapter had come true. He wished that he would never age and that the picture would age instead. Because he looked at the painting and found that it had indeed altered. I wonder if this means that he's immortal...that he cant die. In the 8th chapter Dorian began to start thinking about how rude he was when he broke up with her. He felt bad so he wants to marry her. When he tells Lord Henry this, and he tells him that she is dead. Apparently she killed herself by drinking some acid and died instantly. Come to find out that Dorian thinks that he murdered her with his words. Right after he wrote her a letter apoligising and telling her that he loved her. Lord Henry starts making him feel bad by telling him that his marriage would've been awful anyways. It sucks that when someone is down that other people make them feel worse. If this story was a play it would've been a tragedy. Even worse than any Shakesphere play. Sybil must have been really torn to kill herself...and i feel like i have been in her place before, like i can relate to how she felt before she died.
Even though his love killed herself Dorian decides to go to the opera with lord henry. This is very weird to me beause if my fiance had killed herself i wouldnt have gone out with my friend the same day, but i guess lord henry, being so witty, convinced him to go. Lord Henry gets on my nerves the way he talks to dorian right after sybil dies he starts talking about how fake she was and stuff which sucks because i wouldnt have wanted to hear someone say that to me if i was in that situation. But Dorian tells him that he is his best friend. I would've been so mad i would'e cursed him out. Like i said in my last response i think Sybil's brother is going to try and kill Dorian, especially now that she is dead. But i am not so sure that he is going to die since he doesnt seem to get old.
The next day after his fiancee died dorian is visited by Basil the painter, who claims that Dorian has changed and morphed into lord henry. Dorian gets mad at Basil and tells him that he is already "Consoled" and that he doesnt need any sympathy. Basil gets upset about the change that he has made in his personality. He starts to ask about the Painting and where it is claiming that he wants to see it. Dorian says that if he looks at the painting that he will never speak to him again. Dorian finds out that he wants to exibit the painting and he freaks out. Dorian Gray asked him why he said he wouldnt exibit in the first place. Basil asks him did he find something different about the painting. Then it all unfolds.
Afterwards Dorian Gray goes to hide the painting in the schoolroom thinking about what sins he will commit will cause the painting to become a corpse. He does this very secretively. Then after he locks the room he returns to read a book that lord henry has left him...he seems be becoming hedonistic more and more. The book was accopanied by a newspaper clipping about Sybil Vane.
After this it seems that Dorian Gray changes dramatically to the end of the book. The influence of this book given to him by lord henry has become a very negative effect on him. He cant keep away from this book and he spends his time either reading it or being drunk and looking at stuff. The only thing he really thinks about is the book or the painting. In the 13th chapter he kills basil!!!! It was awesome. Finally this book gets good. He committed it out of anger but it was not premeditated. Then afterward he gets a dude named Alan Campbell to destroy the corpse he wrote him a note that made him do it. I wanted to know what it said but the author kept this secret. They burned the body with nitric acid.
Like i said before Sibils Brother starts stalking him and Dorian becomes very scared. He meets him at a bar or something and threatens to kill him but he doesnt because he sees that his face looks the same. Saying that the mad who was responsible for his sisters death was near forty. Twards the end of the book
Dorian wants to become "good" so he starts attending church and what not but in the end it ends tragically as Alan Cambell also commits suicide, Syibils brother dies, and as Dorian tries to destroy the painting...he also dies. He becomes old and the portrait hanging on the wall was as everyone last saw him.
I liked the book...it took a while for it to catch on but when it ended i realised how great it was.
