I read 4 chapters of dorian gray and so far it's somewhat boring but i am waiting for the action to happen. So far they have introduced a few main characters amonst tons of other characters but there are 5 characters that have stuck out to me so far. The first is Lord Henry a charming man who thinks very higly of himself. He's a friend to Basil the painter who did the portrait of Dorian Gray... a gorgeous young man who seems to be the center of attention in this book. His character sticks out to me alot not only because he's supposed to be gorgeous, but because he's a bit amusing because he seems like the typical 20 year old guy but in a different century. Another character that seems interesting but i havent gotten to chance to really get to know her is Sybil Vane. Who's an actress at a theatre run by a jew whom Dorian falls in "love" with.
In the first chapter we got to meet 3 main characters and it was really interesting because it seemed like Basil and Lord Henry were homosexual. I thought this because Oscar Wilde led me to think that these 2 guys were calling Dorian Gray handsome and stuff, and because of the fact that Basil said that he must see him everyday or he couldnt be happy. This was very weird to me. Maybe they are a bit gay. But as the book progrressed this confusion subsided. But as i began to really think about it maybe this book really showed the first homosexual characters in british literature. Idk...it's just a thought.
Another thing i found interesting in this novel was the characters feelings on Americans. They seem to have no idea what america is actually like and they just assume stuff it's kinda halarious. Because Lord Henry was conversing with his uncle about someone getting married to a American and they start talking about "american dry goods" and someone asks what that is and they say "American novels" I thought that was amusing.
At the end of the 4th chapter i learned that Dorian Gray was getting married to Sybil. It confused me because in the 5th chapter Sybil's mother Mrs. Vain said that she was stupid to marry him and that she didnt even know his name. Personally i wouldnt marry someone right off the bat that i didnt know his name, no matter if he was rich and handsome or not. I thought it was very sweet that her brother is overprotective of her, even though he's 16 years old. He even went to far as to say that if he ever did her wrong that he would kill her...which was problably going way to far. Then after he said that he went to talk to his mother and asked if she was married to his father She said no, and he left saying that his mother only had one child to look after now. Then i began wondering how could a 16 year old possibly support himself in those days.
This book is very good so far but i am really interested to see whats going to happen. The story hasnt really kicked into motion yet. I think someone is going to die, and i might not be right but i think it's going to be Dorian. I think he's going to mess up with Sybil and get killed by her brother.
